Packing fun into numeracy

Audience: All educators of youth learners (tertiary and in-transition, Māori and Pasifika)

Fee: Free

Workshop Structure: Each day is a combination of two workshops, workshop 1 and workshop 2.
Participants can register for either one workshop or both.

Workshop 1: For less confident educators of embedded numeracy and educators new to embedding practice.

Workshop 2: For more confident educators of embedded numeracy.

Description:

These workshops bring the fun back to numeracy with tried and tested approaches to making numeracy a positive experience for strengthening educators’ numeracy skills and their work with learners. Research refers to numeracy skills as an early indicator of success in further education and employment and case studies show how improved numeracy skills can also improve self-esteem, attitudes and literacy skills. From the successful 2013 series of youth and numeracy workshops comments from participants included,

  • 'my relationship with numeracy is more positive'
  • 'I now have more understanding around the building blocks of numeracy'

The workshops will focus on the ‘Three Knowings’ framework of Knowing the Learner (KTL), Knowing the Demands (KTD) and Knowing What To Do (KWTD) to embed numeracy into your courses with a variety of activities and approaches using a learner-centred focus. In addition, concepts from Unit Standard 26623 will be covered using everyday contexts. You will be invited to join an online community for youth and numeracy to exchange ideas and share experience on your practice guided by an expert facilitator.

Intended outcomes:

  • Improved engagement of youth learners.
  • Improved competence and confidence in teaching numeracy.
  • An increased range of innovative teaching strategies for improved youth learner achievement.
