These workshops were co-delivered by NZCER and the National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults. They included: a range of Assessment Tool user levels from beginner to competent; utlising literacy and numeracy data to inform whole organisation decision making and use of Assessment Tool results to inform teaching and learning practice. Each workshop is specific for its intended audience.

Workshop 1: Administering the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool

Presentation (PDF, 296.3KB)

This workshop is for administrators who are beginner users of the Assessment Tool. The workshop is an introduction to the Assessment Tool and will include the big picture purpose of the Assessment Tool, site navigation and key functions  (uploading learners, creating assessments etc.) and an introduction to the range of reports and data it provides.

Workshop 2: Using the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool

Presentation (PDF, 674.6KB)

This workshop is for educators and other professionals (administrators, managers) who are experienced users of the Assessment Tool and who want more understanding of what the Assessment Tool can provide. The workshop will explain the measurement scale and scale scores, the different types of reports and their purposes including gain reporting, and will set the scene for interpreting reports to inform practice.

Workshop 3: Knowing what to do with the diagnostic results from the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool reports

Presentation (PDF, 1.6MB)

The embedded literacy and numeracy process is designed to facilitate successful learning environments for learners who may otherwise have difficulty with the literacy or numeracy demands of their programme or target vocation. This workshop explored how the embedded literacy process is informed by learners' results with the Assessment Tool. Through the careful mapping of demands, the Assessment Tool informs educators and learners as to specific areas that require development. This allows educators to scaffold demanding tasks to ensure positive learning experiences for learners and to priorities key areas of literacy or numeracy to develop.

Prioritising key literacy and numeracy skills and designing scaffolded strategies to develop these skills can be accomplished using the Learning Progressions and associated resources. The workshop below explores methods of developing group and individual learning plans that facilitate this process. A real example is given and used to support organisations develop their own literacy and numeracy priorities. The assessment tool is a key component of the process and should be used to inform the planning and implementation of the plans.

Workshop 4: Mining data to make decisions across the whole organisation

Presentation (PDF, 583.2KB)

Ensuring the constant improvement of ELN at organisational, academic and programme levels requires that specific benchmarks be identified and measured appropriately. Five benchmarks are presented in the presentation, in addition to a data utilisation model that describes how data can be used to inform the relevant levels of an educational organisation. The benchmarks reviewed in this presentation can each be informed by data generated by the Assessment Tool. We recommend this material be a starting point for organisations to explore their vision for ELN, select appropriate benchmarks and begin to use the assessment tool data to implement a continuous improvement model.
