Māori: Supporting educators of Māori learners

Audience: Educators from all tertiary education providers; Iwi and Community Organisations, PTEs, ITPs.

Description: This workshop is grounded in and models Te Ao Māori values, tikanga and practices. It highlights components of a model in action which can be used in embedding Te Ao Māori for engaging the learner, in teaching, learning and assessment. In doing so it illustrates that the Learning Progressions are intrinsic to, and can be aligned to Te Ao Māori models. The workshop encourages reflexive practice; gathering and analysing evidence of literacy and numeracy teaching practice and learning in order to respond to learners’ needs and move them towards success in their learning. Opportunities are also provided to develop strategies that foster leadership in collaboration and sharing of literacy and numeracy practice across institutions and organisations; growing sustainable communities of learning.

Intended outcomes:

  • Increased understanding of, and ability to practise an embedded Te Ao Māori literacy and numeracy approach to engage the learner and raise learner outcomes.
  • Increased capability in the measured use of diagnostic assessment (Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool – LNAAT), and formative assessment to inform literacy and numeracy teaching and learning.
  • Enhanced understanding of reflexive practice and its application in developing and implementing sustainable embedded literacy and numeracy systems and practices.
