Literacy and Numeracy Studies Journal


Literacy and Numeracy Studies is an international online refereed journal which promotes research, scholarship and critical analysis of policy and practice concerning the many and complex ways that adult literacy and numeracy are implicated in the lives of young people and adults. Adult literacy and numeracy practices are locally situated, influenced by the cultures and contexts of use. This journal not only explores the multiple understandings of adult literacy and numeracy in policy and practice but also what people do with their skills, and how they use them with different texts and modalities and in differing contexts.

Adults Learning Mathematics – An International Journal (ALM-IJ) is an international refereed journal that provides a forum for the online publication of high quality research on the teaching and learning, knowledge and uses of numeracy/mathematics to adults at all levels in a variety of educational sectors. ALM-IJ is published by ALM: Adults Learning Mathematics - A Research Forum (ALM), an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults: http://www.alm-online.net/.

The International Congress on Mathematics Education

The International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME13) will be held in Hamburg, Germany, 24-31 July 2016 www.icme13.org/

Education For All

UNESCO has published a report and associated infographic with a complete assessment of progress towards the international Education for All (EFA) goals established in 2000 at the World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal. All the EFA goals are important but Goals 3 (Youth and adult skills) and 4 (Adult literacy) are particularly relevant to our field.


The report concludes:

Overall, not even the target of universal primary education was reached, let alone the more ambitious EFA goals, and the most disadvantaged continue to be the last to benefit. But there have been achievements that should not be underestimated. The world has advanced by 2015 beyond where it would have been if the trends of the 1990s had persisted. And monitoring education progress since Dakar has also improved and expanded.

In the end, the EFA movement can be characterized as a qualified success, even if EFA partners have not collectively lived up to their commitments. But a lesson reemerging over the past 15 years is that, while technical solutions are important, gaining political influence and traction is of even greater significance, particularly to realize the scale of reform and action required to achieve EFA at the national level. The current discussions on the post-2015 agenda may be offering just such a chance.
