Case Studies of Embedding

Embedding in practice

In 2010 staff and students at Whitireia Community Polytechnic generously gave their time and expertise to the Literacy and Numeracy Project to be filmed for these video clips. The clips provide current examples of how educators embed literacy and numeracy teaching and learning strategies into their vocational teaching practice, and the benefits of this to their learners.

Case Study: Learning Reps programme - Supporting Industry Training

Learning Reps are members of the workforce who are trained by the Council of Trade Unions to promote and support industry training in their workplaces. The reps identify learning needs, including literacy and numeracy, help co-workers overcome barriers to learning and development, and support the learning process to ensure successful outcomes from industry training at work.

Case Study: Downer videos - Infrastructure Industry

These clips reveal some deep-seated changes within the organisation including engagement with, and transfer of learning due to the literacy and numeracy programme. There are insights into the demands of the workplace and how the programme is flexible to meet these needs. Downer have moved away from a set programme of provision to a business as usual model. Literacy and numeracy development is supported throughout all aspects of their business.

Case Study: Noel Leeming videos - Retail Industry

Noel Leeming managers share their experience of accessing workplace literacy funding. They identify benefits and impacts of their programme on employees. Noel Leeming have embedded literacy and numeracy provision into many aspects of their business, and managers explain why they prefer an in-house training model.

Case Study: Thames Timber videos - Lean Manufacturing

These clips provide a comprehensive description of "Branching Out" at the Thames Timber Company. Manufacturing Manager Phil Cave and VETEL tutor Dave Bisset design and implement a literacy and numeracy programme which underpins a Lean Manufacturing approach that achieves sustainable improvements and productivity. Management and workers share their experience of the programme and describe the changes to the workplace and to their personal lives.
