There are many occasions when a worker needs to estimate quantities or values by adding whole numbers together. Some learners have become so reliant on calculators that they underestimate their ability to do simple mental calculations. In the workplace, valuable time and effort is wasted if a calculator has to be pull out for every calculation and estimate.

This short, fast-paced activity builds learners' skills and confidence in adding whole numbers.

Activity: “Pairs and more”

This activity focuses learners on the strategy of making ‘tens’ to add a series of numbers, and recognising patterns when adding 'doubles'.

Key numeracy outcomes

As well as learners having fun with maths, learners will build on their ability to;

  • recognise 'friendly' number combinations, i.e., combinations that make 10 and pairs
  • add single digit and 2-digit numbers.
