Here the length of pipe required is the hypotenuse of the triangle formed. The 800m boundary is the side adjacent to 5°. The cosine of 5° tells us the ratio between the side adjacent to 5° and the hypotenuse. This ratio adjacent : hypotenuse is often written as a fraction:
The calculator returns cos 5° = 0.99619 (rounded to 5 d.p.) This represents the ratio 0.99619 : 1. In other words if the hypotenuse is 1 m, the side adjacent to 5° is 996.19 mm.
