We’ve established that there is a fixed ratio between the side opposite an angle and the hypotenuse in a right triangle.

There is, of course, a fixed ratio between any 2 sides of similar triangles.

In a right triangle the ratio between the length of a side adjacent to an angle and the length of the hypotenuse is called the cosine of the angle.

The ratio between the side opposite an angle and the side adjacent to the angle is called the tangent of the angle.
