Begin with squares

Activity:
Ask the learners if they know what is meant by “a square number”. Discuss that square numbers refer to a counting number, i.e. 1,2,3,.., being multiplied by itself. Connect this to the area of a square with known side length through several examples, like:
32 = 9 A square with sides of length 3 has an area of 9 square units.
52 = 25 A square with sides of length 3 has an area of 25 square units.
A good example of a square number in measurement is the hectare (ha.). This is the area of a square that is 100 metres x 100 metres = 10 000 square metres (m2).
