Take a look at how the two scales compare:
Note that:
- The zero point for the Celsius scale was determined by the freezing point of water. Daniel Fahrenheit used the freezing point of a brine solution to set 0°F.
- There are 100 Celsius degrees to take water from freezing to boiling. The Celsius scale is also known as centigrade (100 graduations).
- There are 180 Fahrenheit degrees to take water from freezing to boiling.
- Since there are nearly twice as many Fahrenheit degrees as Celsius degrees spanning the same temperature range, Fahrenheit degrees must be smaller increments of measure than Celsius degrees.
