Identifying the potentially difficult vocabulary in a text you plan to use with learners is useful because:

• It allows you to pre-teach difficult vocabulary

• It will increase the learners ability to read and understand the text

• It allows you to deliver additional content regarding key concepts

The examples below illustrate a simple syllable-count guideline for identifying potentially difficult words.

Of course, not all long words will be unfamiliar to your readers, and some words with fewer than 3 syllables may be unfamiliar. But the 3-syllable guideline is a starting place for identifying tricky vocabulary.
