To plan effectively, you need to know:

  • the contexts in which learners will be expected to write
  • the demands of their writing tasks- the types of texts that they will have to write, how complex the text needs to be, and how they are expected to carry out the task

Through mapping a writing task, you get a good sense of which areas you need to teach more explicitly and which areas your students already know about and can do quite well.
