A workshop on literacy using pictures to stimulate discussion

Damon has worked with the tutors over a long period of time to develop their teaching strategies for literacy and numeracy. The tutors meet for a one hour session every month. During each session Damon presents a lesson idea that the tutors can apply immediately in their courses. He links the idea to the literacy and numeracy learning progressions.
Firstly Damon talks about the cycle of learners opting out.
“I’ve noticed that our students are pretty hard to motivate sometimes. The less they say, the more we say and before you know it we are talking more and more. They don’t respond and we fill in the gaps,” he says.
