Building the capability of the sector through the provision of focused professional learning opportunities is central to ensuring that literacy and numeracy learning opportunities are of high quality. We promote an embedded approach to literacy and numeracy which equips educators to identify literacy and numeracy needs and demands in vocational courses and workplaces, and supports adult learning in a range of contexts.

This section of the website provides opportunities for educators to build their understanding of effective literacy and numeracy practices by engaging in online learning programmes, enrolling in face to face workshops, reviewing materials from conferences and symposia, and participating in professional learning communities.

Professional development workshops and organisational advisory services

The National Centre offers a variety of workshops and support in various locations throughout the year to develop and support educators' skills in embedding literacy and numeracy in vocational teaching environments.

Our professional learning opportunities include: workshops; tailored advisory services for organisations, managers and educators; symposia and Wānanga; online modules and resources.

Symposia, Wānanga & Conferences

Information on upcoming conferences, symposia and wānanga are available throughout the year. Video recordings and copies of presentations from past adult literacy and numeracy focused events are also available.

Self-guided professional development

Resources to support educators' independent professional development.

The webinar series

The webinar series began in March 2010 and comprises a live, online, webinar-based lecture each week.  It is free and registrations are open to anyone interested in attending.

Each webinar features a speaker or speakers who are experts in their field.  Presentations are provided on a particular topic of current interest (e.g. the use of the assessment tool); or on a particular topic of interest and importance to the sector or sector groups (e.g. effective pedagogy for embedding numeracy).
